Invitation by OMED President
Dear friends and colleagues,
We are delighted to invite you to attend this workshop which will address important issues relating to the use of sedation in endoscopy. We intend to cover the recent advances that have been made in this area and will focus on indications, the nature and safety of sedative and anaesthetic drugs, their administration, the monitoring that is required and issues relating to training in their use. Our aim is to produce a consensus view and to publish recommendations.
Sedation varies according to the endoscopic procedure planned, the wishes of patient and endoscopist and the location of the examination. "Light sedation" administered by the endoscopist is often employed but there is an increasing demand for short-acting anaesthetics particularly for prolonged or uncomfortable therapeutic procedures, their use however has generated debate and we hope that this workshop which will take an overall view of the area will generate guidelines that can be generally accepted world-wide.
We have a distinguished international faculty but intend this workshop to be open to any medical practitioners who have an interest in these issues and who would like to contribute to the debate.
Tony Axon, President OMED.
